First appearing in 1675, and an early entry in the rise of the newly fashionable 'nouvelle historique', at a time when novel writing was under attack by moralists for telling lies and stimulating the passions. In this historical novel, Boisguilbert claimed to be telling the truth about Mary Queen of Scots, not writing a 'romance', apparently hoping to blunt the criticism.
